LESSON 16 --- WHAT PRACTICAL ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE?
Lesson16: WHAT PRACTICAL ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE?

1. I started studying English in middle school and continued studying throughout college. I even went to private academies at night. I have a pretty good vocabulary and a strong grasp on grammar, but I have trouble in conversations and in writing. I feel my English hasn't improved a bit despite many years of studying. What should I do?

2. I would like to lose some weight because I think it would make me look a bit younger and healthier, but I just can't stick to my diet. Whenever I see or smell something good I just have to try some!

3. I'm too forgetful. It's very embarrassing when I don't keep an appointment or can't remember someone's name. I don't think I am any less intelligent than other people, and I'm not absent-minded, but I just can't keep simple things in mind. How can I improve my memory?

4. My worst habit is overspending. I simply can't save anything. Whenever I see something I want, I buy it even if I know I don't need it and can't use it. If I run out of money I just use my credit card. I can't stop myself. Help!

5. I know that very soon I'll strike it rich and never have to work again, so I buy as many lottery tickets as I can. I am convinced that this helps my odds tremendously. But so far I'm losing a lot of money. Do you have any idea for me?

6. My boyfriend is always late for our dates. If we are supposed to meet at 6:00, I'm lucky if he shows up before 7:00. If I get tired of waiting and leave, he gets angry at me. What can I do?

Is This True?

1. People say a first love is never fulfilled. Why do they believe that? What is so special about a "first love" that makes it such an impossible delusion? What about you-do you think it is true? Why or why not?

2. According to an old saying, there is no dutiful son in the face of his parents' long, hard-to-cure disease. By extension, this applies to a spouse as well. Do you believe this top be true? Or are you critical of those who think so?

3. People believe appearance is more important than character. If you dress up it will make a better impression on other folks than if you dress casually. If you drive a sedan, you will get better service at a hotel than if you drive a compact. And so on. Do you agree?

4. Money talks. People who have a lot of it generally find it easier to gain social advantage than those who are poor. Right? That is why it is said, "Money can do everything" and even, "Money is everything." Money can buy everything even love. Do you agree?

5. Do you believe the old saying, "Easy come, easy go"? It means that something that is easy to obtain is not easy to hold on to. If so, why? IF not, why not?

6. A lot of people still seem to think sons are more important than daughters. This idea goes way back in time to when sons brought humor and income to the family, and carried on the family name, while daughters meant a lot of expense but no permanent investment since she went off eventually to some other family. Do you think so too?
