Interview Questions for those who wish to be PHYSICIANS

What was a major event in your life and how has it affected you?

What is the happiest you have ever been? Why?

What is the saddest you have ever been? Why?

What was the most difficult decision you have ever had to make? Why? How did you make it and what happened?

How would you get a person you didn't particularly like to do something you needed them to do?

How do you handle a difficult or unpleasant task when it involves another individual or individuals?

What is a major problem in the USA today? If you were the President of the USA what would you do to change it?

What do you do in your spare time? Are you involved in extra-curricular activities at Clemson? What are your hobbies?

What do you like best or worst about your hometown? Would you like to continue to live there (hometown) after you become a health professional?

During high school, did you do anything of which you are particularly proud? What?

If you had the opportunity to repeat the last five years, what might you do differently and why?

What do you read outside of required school reading? What was the last book you read not required for class? What was the BEST book you ever read? What was the BEST book you ever read not required in class?

Do you read the newspapers?

Please describe and discuss yourself? Strengths and weaknesses?
(Be prepared to provide examples.)

What is an average day like in your life?

Who are your role models or mentors? Why? Do you have medical role models or mentors? Who and why?

Who would you most like to be like in 10 years?

Tell me how you will handle being married while you go through medical school.

Tell me about your husband/wife. How well does he/she support your desire to go to medical school?

What is your major? Do you like it? Why or why not? Do you think your major will help you in the future? How?

What have been your most and least favorite classes in college?

What kind of people do you enjoy being around the most? Least?

What jobs have you enjoyed the most? Least? What have you learned from some of the jobs you have held?

What kind of car do you drive? (If it is foreign, why isn't it a car built in the USA?
If it is built in the USA, aren't foreign cars better?]

What does your father or mother do for a living? Why did you decide not to enter their occupation? Do your parents support your decision to go to medical school?

Do you have any brothers or sisters? What do they do?

Define a "political cartoon" in two minutes. What do you think of Garfield?

What does success mean to you?

You listed playing the guitar as one of your hobbies. Name three places a "G" note can be found on a guitar.

You listed turkey hunting as one of your hobbies. How many of the 13 North American species have you killed?

How do you know you want to be a physician? What area of medicine would you like to explore/enter?

Look at this evaluation sheet (usually MUSC) and tell me how you would evaluate yourself on each topic.

Look at this evaluation sheet (MUSC again) and pick out the three topics which you feel are the most important attributes of a physician.

Tell me what you know about the health care industry? Where are health care delivery systems headed? What is an HMO, PPO etc. and how do they operate?

How do you feel about: abortion, terrorism, malpractice, insurance, euthanasia, etc.?

What medical schools have you applied to? If accepted to all of them, which one would you choose?

How have you financed your undergraduate education? How will you finance your medical education? (Remember, you can't work part time while in medical school.)

Do you support capital punishment? Why or why not?

What place does religion have in medicine?

What should be done about drug use by health professionals?
