I WISH……..I WOULD

Rule: We use would, when we imagine a situation or action Sometimes would / wouldn’t is the past of will / won’t.

Examples:

1. It would be nice to buy a new car but we can’t afford it.
2. I’m not going to invite them to party. They wouldn’t come anyway.
3. I would stay a little longer but I really have to go.
4. Tom said he would call me on Sunday.
5. Ann promised that she wouldn’t be late.

A) We use I wish…..would……when we want something to happen or when we want somebody to do something. The speaker is not happy with the present condition/situation.
Negative Form: We can use I wish……wouldn’t….to complain about things people do repeatedly.

Examples:

1. It is raining. Jill wants to go out, but not in the rain. She says: I wish it would stop raining.
2. The phone has been ringing for five minutes. I wish somebody would answer it.
3. I wish I would do something instead of just sitting and doing nothing.
4. I wish you wouldn’t keep interrupting me.

B) We use I wish…. Would …. For actions and changes, not situations.

Examples:

1. I wish Sarah would come.
2. He wish Dane would talk to him today.
3. I wish somebody would buy me chocolates.
4. I wish the government would improve the social security systems.
5. My sister wish that her boyfriend would come today.

C) We can also use would when we talk about things that happened regularly in the past. The use of would is also similar with “used to”

Examples:

1 When we were children, we lived by the ocean. In the summer, if the weather was nice we would all get up early and go for a swim.
2. When Arthur got angry, he would walk out of the room.
3. When my grandfather talked to me, he would make me laugh.
4. When I passed difficult exams, I used to treat myself with a big mac in Mcdonalds.
5. When my brother was young, he used to tease me with his playmate.
