Lesson 11 --- QUESTIONS 1 & 2
Lesson11: QUESTIONS 1 & 2

Question (1)
In questions, we usually put the first auxiliary verb (AV) before the subject (S):

S + AV                        AV + S
Tom will                      will Tom?              *Will Tom be here tomorrow?
You have                     have you?            *Have you been working hard?
I can                           can I?                  *What can I do?
The house was            was the house?      *when was the house built?

Ø In Simple present questions, we use do/does
Ø In simple past questions, we use did:
Ø Negative question (isn’t it…?/ didn’t you…?) we use negative questions to
   show surprise.
Ø We also used them when we expect the listener to agree with us

Examples:

1. Didn’t you hear the doorbell?
2. Haven’t we met somewhere before?
3. Who wants something to ea?
4. Which bus goes downtown?
5. Which Job has Jane applied for?

Questions (2)
(Do you know where…?/ She asked me where…)

Ø Be careful with do/does/did questions (simple present and past).
Ø Use if or whether where there is no other question word (what, why, etc.)

The same changes in a word order happen in reported questions:

Ø Direct: The police officer said to us, “Where are you going”?
Reported: The police officer asked us where we were going.

Ø Direct: Claire asked, “What time do the banks close?”
Reported: Claire wanted to know what time the bank closed

Examples:

1. What time does the movie begin?
2. Why did Ann leave early?
3. Do you know if anybody saw you?
4. Do you know what time the movie begins?
5. Can you tell me where can I find Linda?
