Lesson7: HAVE SOMETHING DONE
 
We use “have something done” to say that we arrange for somebody else to do something for us.

Examples:
Lizzie had the roof repaired.
Meaning: She arranged for somebody else to repair it
Did Anne make the cake herself, or did she have it made?
Our neighbors have just had air conditioning installed in their house.
We are having the house painted at the moment
I don’t like having my picture taken.

We can also say “get something done” instead of “ have something done”
Informal spoken English

Examples:
When are you going to get the roof repaired? (Instead of “have the roof repaired)
I think you should get your hair cut.

We can use “have something done to say that something happens to somebody or their belongings.
              
Examples:
Leny and Eric had all their money stolen while they were on vacation.
James had his nose broken in a fight.
Have you ever had your passport stolen?
Exercise 1:
Use the following verbs by answering the questions below.
           Clean, cut, repair, service

1. Why did you take your car to the garage?
2. Why did you take your jacket to the cleaner’s?
3. Why did you take watch to the jeweler’s?
4. Why did you go to the hair salon?

Exercise 2:
Use the words in parentheses to complete the sentences.
Use the structure “have something done”

1. We ___________________ (the house/ paint) at the moment.
2. I lost my key. I’ll have to ___________ (another key / make).
3. When was the last time you __________ (your hair / cut)
4. _______________________ (you/ newspaper/ deliver) to your home, or do you buy one on your way to work?
Brian: Are you busy Peter?
Peter: Yes, but why do you ask?
Brian: I’d like you to send this mail for me to the post office
Peter: Oh, I would love to but I’m too busy. I would have done that for you had I not been doing anything else. I’ll help you once I’m done.
Brian: Ok, thanks
